>> hello, again, i'm don scott. >> i'm mary brubala. >> the violence was likely gang related. wjz was the only station live from the scene saturday night. adam mays stays on the scene from the interharbor right now. >> reporter: police are reviewing surveillance video, mayor dixon blamed state lawmakers for allowing crimes like this to occur. saturday night's shooting at the inner harbor was a result of of a feud between the bloods and crips. >> we don't need that to happen in our harbor, we have to send that kind of message, we can't tolerate it. >> a string other assaults even a tapping earlier this year, prompted police to add other officers to the tourist hotspot. >> things are different at nighttime. >> i wouldn't come down by

myself. >> saying she'd like to see more police, unimpressed by the already increase patrols. but the mayor says it's a much bigger issue. >> we keep focusing on legislation at the state to get some to deal with illegal guns, i guaranty you if they caught that guy, he would have been out the next day. >> mayor dixon referring to house bill 87, she testified in favor of that back in april in annapolis that legislation did not make it through the general assembly, it would have increased the penalties for repeat gun offenders. police are still looking for the suspect in this weekend's shooting. live at the inner harbor, wjz eyewitness news. >> both of the wounded men are expected to survive. the season's first tropical storm makes landfall in florida. this was the scene just a short time ago in pensacola. there is some wind damage being reported. take a look at the damage in

cape coral, residents spotted a tornado move through the area, cars as we saw toppled and 23 homes are damaged, fortunately everybody escaped without injury. so where is claudette now and where is hurricane bill? bernadette woods is tracking it all for us in the first warning weather center. >> three named tropical systems, claudette made landfall early this morning, i want to show you first warning doppler radar, what we have going on at this point is mainly heavy rain. just offshore you're seeing the purples, that is going to come on shore in the next few moments here, will continue to feed up from the gulf, it's lost a lot of its circulation, it made landfall at 1:10 eastern time just outside of fort walton beach. in the center of this, it will continue to move off to the northwest. this track right here, we're going to switch it over and show you our satellite here, better idea of the track going

obama's top aides are signaling he may be willing to give up his fight for a controversial part of the healthcare reform plan. as he wraps up his swing through the rest, his deputies are closing the door to a proposal that does not include a government run insurance plan. >> the bottom line is, we have to have choice and competition in the insurance market. >> the move to win over conservatives by giving up the so-called public option has angered liberals. >> just do a little insurance reform, and then we'll tackle healthcare reform another time. let's not pretend we're doing reform without a public option. >> reporter: the white house knows it will have to win over critics when lawmakers return to work. it won't be easy. the president has to convince conservative members of his own party as well as republican senators. >> i think a lot of the proposals the president's talked about and some of the democrats have talked about are in deep trouble. the american people are

figuring out. >> one key conservative democrat is proposing a system run by the government but run independently. the white house said it would be willing to look at that option. but president obama and his top aids insist they're not backing away from their basic argument, the time for healthcare reform is now. at the white house, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> the president may take a break from his healthcare pitch today when he addresses war veterans in phoenix, arizona. bob erhlich could soon step back into the political spotlight. there is renewed speculation this noon about whether erhlich will seek office again this year. richard hug says he believes erhlich will run. the decision won't be announced any time soon and the governor could wait months longer. back in 2002 he waited until march to announce his big.

the markets are plunging, what's behind the big drop? >> reporter: investors around the world are fearing we're not quite out of the woods yet in this recession, consumers are still spending less, last quarter many companies were forced to cut costs in order to meet earnings estimates, now investors fear things could get ugly if consumers don't start spending more. just a moment ago, the dow is down 149 points off the session lows, however, the s&p 500 down 20, the nasdaq down 47 this noon. investors searching for some economic security are moving to bonds. >> retail lows is among the company's selling off. sales fell 19% last quarter, something nobody predicted. it's a calm day for us weatherwise out there, take a live look outside, hot out

warning weather and the question is, we'll have your neighborhood outlook. now back inside. >> a shorter drive to the emergency room will come for the people just east of the bay bridge, the ground breaking is set for graysonville later today for the queen anne's county emergency care center, residents needing emergency care have to travel to easton or cross the bay bridge to annapolis. you can take it or leave it. that's what crabbers across the state are being told today. the maryland department of natural resources says it's effort to buy back thousands of crab licenses isn't working as expected. some of the crabbers sent in bids far exceeding what the state was willing to pay to get them off the water. officials are now offering a flat rate of $2200. still to come on wjz's eyewitness news at noon. >> awesome! >> it is cool. >> awesome!

a brutal and alarming campaign is underway right now in iraq, where gay men are being tortured and then killed. the bodies of of several gay men were found earlier this year near baghdad. derogatory terms were spray painted on their chests. in the meantime, in afghanistan, it's proving to be a violent road to the country's second election. a u.s. as much as member and american civilian were iled today in an insurgent attack. ballots are being distributed for thursday's election. an officer has been shot in michigan. these pictures were taken moments ago in monroe city. the officer was shot either in or near that house. it appears the shooter is still

inside. the officer has been airlifted to a hospital, no word on his or her condition. several wildfires are still burning out of control in california. check out the scene in santa maria, where the flames have been charring the earth for more than a week now. this fire actually started at a marijuana growing operation believed to be run by a mexican drug organization. those who live there remain on alert and may have to evacuate. >> because of this, you know, we have to kind of just really keep a vigilant eye on making sure that if we see anything strange, we contact one another, and also let the authorities know. >> people living in the nearby santa cruz mountains have been allowed back in their homes as firefighters gain ground there and follow a mandatory evacuation order over the weekend. george michael insists he was sober after being involved in a serious car crash, michael was driving a land rover on friday when he hit a tractor- trailer. he hasn't been charged with any crime, but you'll recall he was

a couple clouds out there, not too bad overall. it's halting our warmup this afternoon, which is not necessarily a bad thing. where there's more sunshine, it's 89 already in ocean city. temperatures have really jumped out west also, 84 in oakland, 82234 cumberland. the dewpoints, about 60 degrees yesterday, 72. the temperatures and humidity are building. high pressure is dominating our forecast, what's happening with it is slowly sinking off to the eastment as that happens, it's going to be close enough to

keep us dry, with a couple clouds around, take a look out to the west, here's the real storm track, and this front is eventually going to move our way, as if does so, it's going to pick up moisture from the south and tropical storm claudette down to a tropical depression, continuing to weaken. this is the latest advisory from this morning, they're no longer issuing advisories any more. claudette is now on shore. it will continue off to the northwest losing strength, but still with a lot of moisture from it, some of that moisture is going to get sucked up into the front moving our way, as we head toward wednesday, the chance for a couple showers and thunderstorms do enter the picture around here. high pressure keeps us dry for today, other than maybe in the mountains here this afternoon, tomorrow for the most part, we're dry once again. out way, better chance for showers and thunderstorms, developing during the late day hours. on wednesday, with this front coming and picking up moisture, we're going to see scattered
